AD | Chop Grill and Bar Review – Aberdeen Restaurant Week

Aberdeen Restaurant Week 2020 is running between 24 February and 1 March and I am working with Aberdeen Inspired alongside other foodies to review the menus and I got the chance to visit Chop Grill and Bar to review their Aberdeen Restaurant Week menu last week.

If you want to know more about Aberdeen Restaurant Week, find out all you need to know on my other blog post

Chop Grill and Bar

Chop Grill and Bar can be found within the Sandman Signature Hotel, on St Andrews Street in Aberdeen. The Sandman Group started over 50 years ago, in British Colombia, Canada. Since then they have opened hotels all over North America and the Aberdeen hotel is their first Scotland location. There are both Canadian and Scottish touches to the decor and menu: tartan furnishings, Canadian Molson Lager on tap and Haggis on the menu.

I love the swanky surroundings of the Sandman Hotel and Chop Grill & Bar and think the restaurant is an amazing asset to Aberdeen.

Chop Grill and Bar is a lively place with both a formal restaurant area and comfortable seating in the bar. I prefer sitting in the bar as it has a great vibe. If you’re a sports fan, the bar also has screens all around the bar. I would recommend Chop Grill and Bar to couples, groups of friends and families with older children and it is also great place to start a night out, with an array of cocktails. Equally as impressive is the decor, with swanky seating, Aberdonian touches throughout and not forgetting that insta-worthy umbrella decorated roof. Also worth noting is the whisky lounge with over 150 single malts to try out.

The Menu

With a mix of Scottish and Canadian influences, the menu celebrates both cultures and features favourites such as Haggis Bon-Bons and Fish and Chips.

What we ate

The starters were the best part of the meal for us. We had Lettuce Wraps and Buffalo Chicken Wings. The Lettuce Wraps were full of flavour and I loved the DIY element to them – I am definitely going to recreate them at home. The chicken wings were coated in a hot buffalo sauce and unlike many wings I’ve had before were very meaty. I’d highly recommend both dishes.

For mains, we had the Battered Fish and Chips and the Roast Chicken. The chicken was soft and cooked perfectly, with a creamy mushroom sauce and veg. I unfortunately couldn’t taste the whisky in the sauce, but it was still pretty tasty. The Fish and Chips portion was huge and served with a tasty homemade lime mayonnaise for something different. I would have preferred chunky chips, but that’s just a preference.

Dessert was also as amazing as the starters. The brownie bite was tasty, but it did not compare to the sticky toffee pudding which was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Just the right amount of sweetness, and loads of sticky toffee sauce. The highlight though was an amazing homemade whisky creme anglaise.

Final Thoughts

As one of Aberdeen’s newest hotels, The Sandman Signature Hotel offers plush surroundings and an amazing place to eat in Chop Grill and Bar. I highly recommend it here for food, drinks and a stay!
